Sorry to keep posting but finding this forum and knowledge is like a goldmine to me and I have some pent-up questions!
On the roller package it always urges a W yet it seems many painters use the top to bottom roll method.
I was using a 10mm (smooth) roller but it doesn't hold enough paint to do a whole roll so at the suggestion of a local pro, switched to a 15mm (semi smooth). It held much more paint and made life so much easier but I wonder if its the right thing to do?
So whats the answer, W or top-to-bottom? Smooth or semi-smooth roller?

I assumes you are rolling walls/ceilings?
10mm is way too small. 15mm is better, but we would use 19mm (3/4").
Either the 'W' or top to bottom is fine, just depends on what you are comfortable doing. A bigger nap will allow either method to cover a decent area.

At least 15mm
And whatever works for you, W or Up and Down
I even use L/R sometimes :)

A lot depends on the surface you are rolling. Up and down is usually fastest. The main thing is to get even coverage through out the whole wall/ceiling.

I paint top to bottom, but I seem to roll in the pattern of an inverted "N". It seems to me that by the time I have rolled down the wall, back up at a bit of an angle, and back down again, it's time for more paint on the roller. I also backroll every thing once I get to the end of a wall, to evenly distribute the paint, eliminate lap lines, and coat anything that might have gotten missed, which is sometimes hard for me to see when painting the same color in poor light. Being color-blind doesn't help!

Joneq does it like XSleeper. Most pros too I would imagine.2 stripes reload, unless you are using a paint stick.
Most important thing is to have plenty of light. One of those 500 watt halogen lights[less than $15] does nicely. Put it at the opposite end from where you are painting and work toward it. When you get near the other end move the light to the other side.
Every once in a while take a real close look at what you just painted and look from different angles[ropes and missed spots]
Joneq says=="If you can't see it,don't paint it"

:) The only kind I use!! Most people don't like them because they cost more and are not as durable if not used properly. I'm from the old school and never really mastered synthetic covers. IMO lambs wool covers release the paint better and have less roller spray. They are also easier to clean up.
