I was given a beauiful dresser, but the drawers do not open and shut easily. It is all wood, wood on wood and i tried a little wax but it needs more. What can I do to make the drawers slide as they should?

Such drawers are usually worn so that they sit lower than when fitted. Occasionally I find nailheads revealed, and rubbing. Those should be re-buried with hammer and nail-set (use a big screw for a nail-set in a pinch).

What I use to smooth the action is glide tape, on the runners. This nearly rigid tape is widely available in Japan, for sliding screens, doors, etc. A lighter version can be seen here:
