I am installing some new cable TV jacks in my basement and I was looking for help on how to strip coaxial cable properly. I have heard there are tools available, but they are rather pricey.

Good Morning, coopsman:

There are several trains of thought on this subject and every tech has his pet method of removing the insulation on a piece of RG-59 coaxial cable. So, my method may be different from the next guy (or gal).

I use a common jack knife to remove the outer insulation. I just pick a spot, spin the blade around the coax, hook the blade in the cut, and pull. Off it comes.

Assuming you are installing F-59 connectors,
I peel back the shield and use a common wire stripper (Radio Shack 64-2129 - $3)to cut the center dielectric without cutting the center conductor. You need to leave about 1/4" of the dielectric protruding to fit into the center of the F-59.

Cut off any shield exposed beyond the cut of the outer covering. Install the crimp ring on the cable, push the F-59 connector onto the cable. The connector will make contact with the shield under the outer covering and the cable center conductor w/dielectric will be in the center of the F-59.

Shove the crimp ring up against the connector and crimp. If you are doing a lot of connectors, use Radio Shack 278-238 crimper ($16). If you are doing more than ten but less than 15 connectors, use Radio Shack 278-242 ($7). The expensive one will keep your hands from getting tired but both will do the job. Radio Shack has a crimper for $3.50 but I would rather save my money and buy a lottery ticket.

Buy extra connectors. You're bound to do it wrong a couple of times.

Smokey ;)
