I have noticed that my compressor* doesn't ever shut off. Even when I shut down everything at the thermostat, the compressor still chugs away.

Any ideas what's wrong?

* I hope I'm using the right term. I'm talking about the big outside AC unit.

have you tried removing the Y wire on your t-stat? (Make sure you turn off the power when you remove the t-stat.) if it stops, then it's the t-stat.

If still runing, then may have to remove the covers outside, and check to see if the contactor is stuck.. DO NOT let the system run all the time when you have no need of cooling inside.. Otherwise the coil may freeze up and have a flood back to the compressor.

Hmmm... the Y wire on my t-stat? I notice that there is one red wire on my thermostat that is connected to two terminals. Is that what you are talking about?

No let that Red wire alone Look and you will see one screw maked Y .Take that one off. If unit dont shut off check on the contactor in the out side unit and see if it is stuck shut.

your unit inside may stay on so dont be confused! on some units they have time delays , so it may take a about 5 min for it to shutdown. they use that for short cycling purposes, but more than likely its your t stat.
Is it one of those mercury type ? i jsut replaced a tstat today, that was doing the same thing

Pulling the "Y" wire off will kill the contactor outside if it continues to run that means the contactor is "more than likely" stuck if it does shut down then the stat is bad.
