View Full Version : pop and it goes blank

That's about it in a nut shell. For the past couple of weeks, the t.v. has made a popping sound and then goes blank with no picture or sound. Worse yet, it only happens sometimes and then sometimes it pops back on. Is my t.v. dying a slow death or should I take it in. Any help is appreciated.

Good Afternoon, lelkins:

I need you to elaborate briefly on the condition of the television set when it fails. Does the screen go black or is it a blank raster (lighted screen)? If it is a lighted screen, is there snow? When the sound goes out, is the sound totally dead quiet or is there noise from the speakers?

We'll try to help you but the description of no sound and no picture covers a lot of areas.

Thanks for the reply...the screen goes black, no color and there is no detectable noise from the speakers. However, I noticed that when the screen comes on later, that I was able to change the channel when the screen was black, so there is something going on there.

Good Morning, lelkins:
It sounds like a bad solder connection and it is failing under heat. When the set warms up, circuit boards flex a little bit and a bad connection will cause problems.

No picture (black picture) and no sound at all. My first visit would be to the low voltage power supply for the problem. Second choice would be at the video output stage. Sound and video connect at this stage and a bad video output stage would give you a black picture. Since you can change channels with the picture black (assume that the change is verified by a sound from the speakers), this would eliminate the tuner, the intermediate frequency amplifiers, etc.

I can discount the high voltage stage (the
25-45,000 volts that lights the picture tube) because it does not normally affect the sound.

It doesn't sound serious and it is worth the time to have a look.
