Need instructions on removing the flange from the drain assembly.
I first broke the retaining net on the lift rod, water leaked from it (was attempting to disassemble to clean hair build up in drain stopper area), thinking I could replace the nut, my hardware store said no, I had to replace the whole thing. Dilema: don't know anything about plumbing, willing to replace it , since I've scracthed the brass on the sink flange, that I can't figure out how to remove.

mummemg, Welcome to the DIY Forums.
I have included a link with pictures of the assembly of the drain piping. Look next to numbers 4 & 8. Once you remove the nut that is right at the bottom of the sink you can start disassembly. Hope this helps. Good luck.
