The new flat I'm about to start work on has awful weave wallpaper in the living room, which has been painted over. The walls are plaster, and the flat was built in the late 60's.
Will a steamer work on this if I score it first?
Or should I use the special gel??
Or will it come off with good old fashioned elbow grease???
Any tips will be greatly appreciated.

I think it's grass weave wallpaper. It was brown before they painted it.

don't score it. lift up a corner, pull & see what happens. i would think that since it's been painted & because of the woven grasscloth, it should hold together and come off in nice big sheets, as opposed to annoying, tiny little strips.

Soak it, soak it, and soak it some more. Grasscloth strips fairly good as it holds the moisture.

Thanks to you both for the advice.
I'll see what happens and let you know what I've learnt from dealing with the dreaded weave wallpaper! ;)

Grass weave should come off quite easily in strips, leaving the paper backing on the wall, which should come off easily will water and a scraper.
The adhesive may be thicker than that used with normal wallpaper, so some extra scraping may be in order.
