My house was built in 1965. One of the toilets will continue to fill with water until I hold the handle up for a couple seconds, then it will stop. One of my friends told me for a quick fix to bend the floater arm down but when I looked in the tank there is no floater! I just bought the house...I don't know the brand/model of the toilet. I assume the floater part of the mechanism needs to be replaced, but does anything else? The flapper seems to be closing tight when I hold up the handle. Thank you for any advice you can give me!

90% sure that's the flapper not fully seating on it's own, since fiddling with the handle - therefore the flapper - sets it right.
Flush normally with tank lid on, then remove the lid and watch (the reason to flush with lid in place is that sometimes the lever arm normally hits the lid). If water level climbs up above overflow tube and drains down it, the float needs adjustment. If water level doesn't overflow there but trickles into the bowl, the flapper isn't seating.

Dunbar plumber - just noticed you're in the Cinti area...so am I (Fairfield). I'm one of the few people who have not purchased a digital camera yet, but I'll try it with my cell phone camera...it may not be clear.
Kobuchi - thanks for the advice - I'll try to see what's going on when I flush it.
