1st: trying to take off the steering wheel to refurbish center console on my new (old) 17' whaler...I removed the center nut under the wheel and hoped the wheel would come right off, it didn't. How do I remove the wheel so I can access the bracket screws to remove the system from the console?

2nd: the steering cable "piston" is frozen at the motor. I've managed to jostle is and get it to move a little using a penetrating lube. Would it be foolish to disconnect the cable and pull it out to lube with grease?

Put the nut back on the helm assemble, have it flush with the helm shaft. Pull up on the steering wheel while hitting the shaft and nut with a large hammer. Hit it square so as not to damage the shaft and it should pop up.
If you can pull out the cable from the steering tube, do it. If the cable is still froze, when it is removed from the tube, then you need a new cable. If it is free, then clean and grease the cable and clean the steering tube.
