My dog had an accident on my 50 year old hard wood floor and I cannot get the smell out of the floor. Does anyone know what I can scrub it with that will neutralize the odor? I have tried a carpet shampoo for pet odors but that did not help.

Go to the pet supply store and ask for a product for dog urine. The store near me has two different products and the cheaper of the two has worked well for us on the carpet in our apartments. I would be careful with a hardwood floor and put some on an inconspicuous spot first to test its effect on your floor.

How is the floor finished? Polyurethane? If so it should be water resistent. But being 50 years old the finish may be gone, depending on how you maintained it. Enzyme cleaners may harm the wood as enzyme cleaners as designed to break down organic materials...wood=organic. So, your best bet depending on how bad the spill was. You may want to invest in some cleaner designed for your finished floor. If that does not work you may have to remove a few boards to see if it soaked thru the wood onto the subfloor. If that is the case you will have to up a few boards clean and seal subfloor and replace the effected boards as they have soaked the urine up. Removing urine from the soaked boards would most likely fail.

There is also the option of stripping and refinishing the floor. This depending on the size of the area is more time consuming. But would seal in/out odors.

All I know is what worked on my carpet. I'd wipe up the urine with paper towels, then brush on a mixture of Dawn & water & wipe it up again (several times), then saturate the spot with Nature's Miracle (from pet supply store).
