How do I measure the window size while the old ones are still in place? Also, I need to replace the rear door but I want it to open outwards instead of inwards. Will this look ridiculous and would this be a problem with building code?

To measure a window, go from the outside of the window stop to the outside of the other window stop. Then open the bottom sash,measure from the bottom of the sash to the top of the header.
To change the swing of a door has nothing to do with code.
