I recently went through the hurricane in Florida... we finally got electricity back last night and everything worked except ....the AC... After looking at the AC I found that you can hear the electricity trying to hit the compressor but nothing ... no fan or compressor.... I tried the heat to verify whether it was the compressor or not but that didn't work either .. any ideas what this might be ......

The line "I hear the electricty trying to hit the compressor" confused me. Does the indoor or out door fan run? After power supply problems, sometimes equipment with p.c. boards 'lock up', kind of like a computer. Power of both indoor and outdoor units just as a long shot.

Well What I mean by that is you can hear the compressor trying to start .. it makes a sound .. like a whiining sound .... like a " urrrr" " urrr" then stops .. then trys again... now to hear this I had the cover off... so its not real loud but you can hear it....
The air handler works so the air actually flows but the outside unit's fan doesnt turn ....
Should I cut the circuit breaker to the AC unit to try this...

Sounds like the compressor is drawing 'L.R.A.' thats locked rotor amps. Inside the compressor is a motor connected to a crankshaft and piston. It may be mechanicaly bound up. Hopefully its not because thats big bucks. It could be a dead capacitor after the strom and all the power problems. Sounds like you need a service call. One thing thats questions me is why isn't the out door fan running?

So what would effect the outdoor fan and the compressor ?

The compressor is a copeland .. how can I check if this unit is under warrentty ? I read the Rheem offers a 5 year warrenty in Florida on parts...

usually on these units the out door fan runs when ever the compressor runs.
5 year warranty on compressors is pretty standard, you would have to pay the labor. Make sure they put on new start componets and contactor if it gets down to compressor replacement.

Got to be two things, no power or incorrect power to motor or motor is dead. I think that was three.
For warranty, get the model and seriel number and contact the manufactuer or service company.

use the model# and serial# of the out door unit, not the compressor numbers. About where to look, try a local service company. My bet is they are going to be busy after the storm.
Got to get to work myself so i'm signing off, good luck.

Before doing all this just replace the capacitor. Storms take them out all the time. Another smart buy where you have occasional power outages is a stat with a delay built in so the compressor doesn't shortcycle with a glitch in the power.

I had an AC guy come out lastnight and for the price of $97 on a Sunday night at 8 pm he replaced the capacitor.. which seemed to fix the issue.....
Thanks everyone
