OK guys...thoughts please...we just moved to a house wihout recessed lighting and my wife misses it...BIG TIME!! In our family room (10' x 16') we have a typical ceiling fixture in the middle of the room and she wants recessed lights installed. I have two questions:
1) Anyone have any tips for retrofitting (I've seen the fixtures at HD and they look pretty easy)...it's the er...cutting holes in my ceiling that's turning my stomach Any links to articles on this?
2) Anyone used one of those long, flexible drill bits for blasting through the joists? I have a fish kit and I've done my fair share of fishing speaker wire etc through walls
3) What do you think a fair per light price would be for an electrician if I chicken out and hire a pro? :)

So should we assume that there is no accessible attic above this room?
If the ceiling is drywall, this is a pretty easy project, even if you have to do some drywall damage. Especially if the ceiling needs painting anyway. And a big hole is just about as easy to repair as a small hole. So I wouldn't go to any extraordinary measures to avoid drywall damage.
Even if you hire an electrician, he's not going to patch the holes, so you might as well do it yourself.
Remember, if you learn to drywall today, it's a skill that will come in handy many times over.

Yes that's right...no attic access. Thanks for the tip John, you're right, I guess either way I'll have to fix the ceiling..
