It's happened again. This makes about the third time in as many months. My hubby brought home his thermos this morning and poured out a cup of coffee. It looked like water with white lumps in it (the milk). He takes milk and sugar. I've never seen anything like it before. It was not even the colour of coffee anymore. The thermos gets well rinsed after each use but there is a coffee residue in the bottom. It also has a sickening smell. Any suggestions? We've tried bleach, baking soda and vinegar.

Try soaking the thermos in a enzyme cleaner..you can find them at your local pet store. Let dwell 10-15 mins rinse with the hottest water possible. Coffee is a organic stain. Enzymes will help break this down. Just a tip do not use acidic pH cleaners on stainless it will pit the surface. Making dirt show more.

I used to use Dip-it once a month in my Stanley thermos. Now I am with Docduck. Enzyme cleaners are the rage and they work. I recommend enzyme drain cleaners in the Plumbing Forum all the time because they cling to clogs and "eat" them instead of eating a small hole in the clog and then exiting down the drain leaving the rest of the clog to start rebuilding as caustic cleaners do. Enzyme cleaners are also safe for septic systems.

Thank you for your responses. I will pick up some enzyme cleaner the next time I'm out and try that. :)

I too take milk in my coffee but find that after an hour or so the milk seems to cause the mix to break down and develop an odd taste.
If he is able, the taste is much better if he can carry some milk or powdered creamer and add it when he pours the coffee.
I also find the coffee will stay hot longer if the pot is microwaved for a minute or so before pouring in the thermos. (Really makes a difference on those -30 deg ice fishing days. ;) )

When the thermos comes home rinse, fill with water and a little bleach to clean and remove coffee oils. Let set overnight. Next morning rinse and fill with hot water to heat thermos while coffee is being made. Dump the hot water and pour in coffee. Cream can be heated in microwave before adding to coffee.
