Decorating and Design - Need Help with ideas forroom divider

When you walk through my door there is a half wall that seperates the sitting room from the foyer and then an opening into the sitting room and then the half wall continues to the living room. On the half wall is a decorative grate. I want to remove this grate to update the home but I am stuck on ideas. I have thought about decorative tile or stained or beveled glass. If anyone thinks of something that would be really cool to do there please let me know! We have tile that runs throughout the house in a burnt red and beige colors. Thanks!

i'm not sure i understand. this half wall.....is it a solid wall on the bottom with ironwork on the upper part? or is the bottom part like an ironwork section that you can see through or is it applied to a solid wall? :confused:

i'm thinking that, if you really want to update, get rid of the half wall entirely. new homes with open floor plans don't use those entryway half walls anymore. the entry is sometimes defined by having a different flooring, like tile, and then the living areas turn to carpet.
