Cleaning and Stain Removal - Gas Spill

My son just spilled gas in the back of my new 4 runner.
What is the best way to get it out of the carpet..
Also the smell thanks....

Best thing to do is pull that section of carpet out of the car. The gas has no doubt seeped underneath of the carpet and surface cleaning will not remove the source of your odor. Pulling the carpet may be easier than you think. As most are just held in place by the surrounding trim. Pop the trim off and clean the metal underneath with plenty of COOL water. Make sure you have the car in a well aired area during this. For the carpet. Since most carpets are thin in vehicles. I would toss it outside and hit it with the hose..making sure to rinse both sides of the carpet. And let dry. Repeated attempts may be needed to remove the odor. For starters i would just use water to remove the gas. I wouldnt start adding chemicals to a gas spill unless it doesnt remove after multiple attempts and even then i would just consider using maybe a low mix of car wash soap and water followed by a good rinse. Again, if your carpet isnt anything special i think this will work.

Cleaning gasoline, and oily solvent, with water will not be effective, as you will be trying to mix water and oil. If spill was small, a solvent cleaner like denatured alcohol or dry cleaning fluid can be used. If the spill was large, aIICRC (Institute of Inspection Cleaning & Restoration) certified carpet cleaning company is recommended.
