I'm replacing my old cast iron bathtub and because of the size of the room (4'3" x 10') the only tub that I could find to fit was a porcelain on steel
46 1/2" tub. I've put a ledger board frame on the 3 sides to support the tub, do i need to put down a mud base as the previous tub did not have one?

Mortarbeds are not NORMALLY needed on steel or cast iron tubs. They are not prone to flexing as are fiberglass and plastic tubs. Good luck.
Your tub should have installation instructions. To take advantage of any warranty, follow their instructions.
