Toilets, Sinks, Showers, Tubs and Disposals - 12 in toilet and 14 in rough in

Haveing gutted and refinshed our bathroom I was feeling pretty confident until I went to dry fit the toilet... the rough-in for the flange is 14 in and the toilet is 12 in :wall: :wall: :wall:. I can't move the drain because it is up against a floor joist. Do I have any other options? Is there anything I can do to make this look less obvious or do I need to just suck up the mistake and return the special order toilet... with re-stocking fee.

Hmmmm....restocking fee would be peanuts compared to buying a 14" toilet. Actually, I have never heard of one. 10" and 12" are the standard. Could you tell me where the 14" measurement came from? I may be learning something here. Always helps to know whats out there. Don't take the special order toilet back until you find out. Good luck.

14" Came from the wall to the center of the drain. It's actually 14.5" but should be 14"... there are some out there but the options are very limited. I think most of the major brands typically make 1 or 2 14" toilets. What get's me is the house isn't that old (1986) and I was under the impression that the 12" standard was made before that. We ended up ordering a space saver cabinet that will cover the top and sides of the tank so the gap won't be that noticable.

Back in the early 70's we were installing 10" and 12" toilets. Did a Holiday Inn and the corner room bathrooms had 12" elongated bowls and all others had 10". Only problem occured due to the fact someone forgot about the doors and the corner room doors all hit the toilets.
