SO a few days my toilet started running. Today it started filling to the top and the when I plunged it emptied out completely. When I flush again, it just starts overflowing again. It is just an "unplungeable" clog? or is there a part in the tank I can change out?

You have me confused. A toilet overflows from the bowl due to a clog. The water in the tank starts running due to an adjustment or need of a new fill valve. Since you said you plunged and all the water went out until the next time you flushed, I am assuming you have a clog. You can try a closet auger (can be rented or bought) or perhaps an enzyme drain cleaner such as Draincare. Please give more info. Good luck.

I have to correct my first entry- I was relaying info from my roomate and had it wrong. After he flushed/plunged the water went almost all the way down but the "contents" remained. But then it wouldn't flush at all. No reaction to the handle. So last night I poured a bucket of water in. Nothing happened. Then I flushed and the water starred raising I plunged like mad and it all went down this time.
Then this morning it happened again where when I tried to flush nothing happened. I poured water in it went down. It flushed OK after that. And yes sometimes it runs. Don't know if that is related or not......so do you still think it has some kind of clog or is something up with the valve/flushing mechanism?

You have two problems. The drain is clogged (or was). This is not allowing things to go down the drain. The toilet running, is either a fill valve adjustment or needs a replacement fill valve. If you replace it I would recommend a Fluidmaster 400A. About $ 6 to$8 and has great installation instructions. Good luck.
