I need to replace the door handle/lock set on an Andersen French door. I can't find a set that will fit at any of the local home improvement places so I called in a locksmith. They are estimating (w/o seeing it) that it will cost between $300-$400 for a replacement set (generic, not Anderson).

Seems a little pricy to me, after looking at the sets in the hardware store.

Am I being ripped off? (That is for product alone, not labor)

Thanks!!

Get a couple more estimates. Some locks are outrageously expensive, some people are unscrupulous. A couple more estimates would tell you which is the case here.

Hi Twizzler3,

One would think so, however, maybe not. What comes to mind is an "Omnia" brand lock. They are quite pricy, however, they are good locks. And how much of that price was labor to install? The only draw-back is there is a waiting period for them. Was that mentioned? I'm trying to find out what you were told about the hardware. So as JMC said, get a couple more estimates.
