I am replacing the vinyl floor in my powder room with tile. The room is small. I have removed the vinyl.
Question, what type and depth of backerboard would you recommend?
The house is 20 years old with joists under the room at 16" on center. The subfloor is wood and appears to be an 1" or so in depth. It is standard construction.
Thanks...

Was there a 1/4" layer of wood by any chance under the vinyl?:)
What type of flooring is there now, and how thick is each layer, what size are these joists and their un-supported span?:)

The joists are 2x10 and the span is approximately 18' but I'll have to verify that.
The existing flooring was removed (vinyl), all I have left is the subfloor. There was orginally one layer of vinyl.

What is your subfloor material?
1x8 planks? 3/4" plywood? 1/2" plywood? OSB? Particle board?

Check that span again, unsupported over 14', no good for tile, I also like more than 3/4" plywood before a membrane or a backerboard, 3/4" is minimum.:)

you're right.. the unsupported length is 12.0'. There was a beam that I wasn't aware of.

Sounds like I am in the same situation only this is a very small bathroom that has a shower. I took out the vinyl and it appears as though there was already a 3/4" plywood subfloor glued onto the existing base (plywood) floor. My question is: Do I need to put another type of material down to help with the moisture?

You need a tile backerboard or membrane or SLC or a mud job under the tile, all will work fine.:)
