Can I remove the bed from my old sofa bed and use the space for storage?? If so do you have any storage ideas? Is the bed frame needed for integrity of the sofa? The bed is so uncomfortable and I could use the storage area?
I so much appreciate your answers. Can you tell me a book that would explain how to do this. I'm a girl without any carpentry experience. It sounds simple. What tools do I need? Where can I get step by step instructions or should I hire someone? If its simple I want to learn how to do it. I'm so appreciative for your help I called around and no one knew if I could do it. Thank you.
I need to know what measurements I need, the recommended materials. I will need to have the hardware store cut everything. What else do I need?
Also, can I donate the bed, is it possible to recycle? What are your ideas?

Yes, the bed can be removed.
No, the bed itself is not pertinent to the structural integrity of the unit.

I'd partition the now open area with plywood, divide it into three sections
and make individual lids for each section to make access easier. 3/4" plywood would give you the strength you need to use the sofa as seating. You'll probably need some 2x4's for framing the area out to support the bottom of the storage area as well as the lids.

Is the bed frame needed for integrity of the sofa?
No, but it supports the seat cushions
You'll need to put some supports in there if you want to sit on it
George's plan is a good one, and that's pretty close to how I've done it (I like the lids! I didn't need them but that's great!)

If you open, or on some models partially open, the mechanism, you'll see on each side where the metal bed attaches to the wood sofa frame
It's usually a few screws, sometimes phillips, sometimes a bolt head, sometimes both
Sometimes access is easier if the sofa is flipped over

its simple to take the bed action out.
with no wood skills or tools you will find it difficult to make a frame to sit your lids on tho!
