View Full Version : non-electric gas range

I need a gas range that does not require electricity. The oven seems to be the problem. From the information I have gathered, all the new ranges have a glow bar that is constantly on during oven use.

So I guess I have to look for an older range, made before the glow bars came in, that uses an automatic pilot light or a spark-lit pilot or a pisoelectric igniter. Does anyone know when that older style stopped being made? What is the correct term for those older styles? (I have a hard time communicating with appliance salesmen because we don't seem to have the same vocabulary.)

Another major problem is that I definitely want one or two high output burners which don't seem to be available on the pre- glow bar models. But the much older models, such as the old Wedgewood stoves had 12,000 Btu burners.

Is there any way to modify either the oven to bypass the electrical component, or the burners to increase the Btu's?

Hi:Syb

Your correct. The type of stove your looking for can only be found in the older Wedgewood, Gaffers, etc. units made years ago.

To locate one you may need to visit a locate appliance repair store. Also check the local newspapers, the older apartment buildings in your area that are being remodeled.

In answer to your last question, the answer is no. New stoves with electric ignitions can not be converted back to pilots.

Good Luck,
