Hi,

I have installed durock in my bathroom alcove and I am now ready to install ceramic tile. My question is, do you have to seal the durock with RedGard before applying the ceramic tile? The sales associate at Home Depot told me that Durock is already waterproofed so it doesn't need it. I only want to do the job once. Also, what is the best type of thinset to use when hanging ceramic tile around the bathtub/shower?

it's not technically waterproof, it's water resistant.
Water will not damage the durok, but it will pass through.

If you did not install a vapor barrier behind the durock, then you need to either take it down and install the plastic or tar paper behind it, or you need to coat the surface with redguard.

HD carries Custom's Versabond thinset. Use that.

Thanks for the info. I did install 6 mil vapor barrier before hanging the durock.
