curious of any suggestions of best ways of keeping termites at bay? we live in a damp and wooded area and there is a history of termite problem in the house. the previous owners placed termite traps - the servicing of which has since stopped. i am aware that there are diy termite traps - are they worth while? or is having a thorough treatment done a better option?

Chad,
I am in the process of evaluating termite bait stations and baits and it appears it may take some patience before I see results. The termites are attracted to the wood inserts in the bait stations when first placed in the ground and inspected about 30 days after inserting. The problem now is that once the wood insert is taken out for inspection, the termites will leave the bait station and may take some time before they come back. The way these things are supposed to work is the termites are fed the bait first and once there is a load of termites consuming the bait, (in about 30 days or more) then the termite killing stakes are inserted in the ground next to the bait station so that they can find them.
When I last checked my stakes, they were not touch at all by termites. So I will be checking them again in three weeks.
If you know the general area where termites are coming in, then all you need is a spot treatment. But you also need to find out where the nest is outside your house and bait this area. The problem so far is to get these termites to cooperate and eat the bait and then the killing stakes.

Did the previous owner have the complete home treated? If there is existing termites and evidence in the home then the bait will not help you and you will need to treat your home. If it has been treated then the bait stations could possibly help you in monitoring for future problems and kill them b4 they attack again.
Spot treatments can work temporarily, you have to remember a termites nest may not be directly at that specific spot.

DIY termite treatments do not come with a warranty. A professional exterminator is recommended. They have the equipment and chemicals to properly do the job. Baits tend not to be effective as a stand-alone control. As indicated, termites may pass up the bait station and head for your home. With a history of termites, the annual pest control contract and inspection should be maintained.
