I am remodeling a 30yr bathroom and because of space constraints i have a window in my shower. What do you recommend i do to cover the window? Are blinds an option? What about stained glass, privacy film? Any advice would be appreicated. I really don't know what I should do.

Can you replace the window with glass block? Or at least replace the window with one that is all vinyl. I'm afraid there could be water damage in the future with an old wood window in a shower enclosure. The lifting mechanism of a blind will fall apart in no time in a wet environment, you would be better off with some sort of peel and stick on the glass that can be used in wet areas. You could hang a cut up shower curtain over the window if you can find support brackets and a pole that wont rust.

Depending on just how completely you want to block things out, you could do what my father did. He used a portable sandblaster on the window glass to make it translucent. This still allows light in, but you can't really see through it anymore.

Of course, you would need to do a lot of prep work to contain the sand/dust and wear a good respirator.

toodles12,

Not sure what you have for wall coverings or exterior siding application but maybe glass block would be the best option all around -

Hope this helps!

*bump*

I have a very similar question, and I thought that I'd put it here instead of a new thread. Maybe this can become the definative "window in a shower" thread.

Anyway, my question is for a new construction. Since I'm going to do the window myself, I get to choose exactly how to do it. If I want to put a window over a tub/shower enclosure, what is the best way to install it so it won't leak, etc? I've never done one of these, so a step by step would be very helpful.

A little background perhaps:
I'd like to use tile for the shower walls, and something like a 5x32 or 36 Home "Depot-cheapot" brand for the tub itself. The tub will sit slightly out from the house in a bump out running the length of one side of the tub. On the bumpout is a window, providing the only outside light for the room. I'd rather stay away from a skylight in this room, and on top of that, I think the bumpout in my application would look extremely odd from the outside of the house if it was windowless. I have a certainteed replacement vynal window that is frosted, and I may use that. I'd be adding some certainteed nailing fin (which their rep didn't know existed) to the window.

A wierd thought I just had about the nailing fin. Would it help seal the space around the window if I installed nailing fin on both the interior and exterior of the window?

 Thanks guys, keep up the great posts.

My first home had a tub with no shower and a window over the tub. I added a tub surround which cut with a utility knife to fit around the window and caulked it very well. I simply used a shower curtain which I cut down to fit over the window for privacy. It did a great job keeping the woodwork around the window from getting wet. I used high gloss paint as well.

Our new house has a narrow window over the 2nd floor bath shower which is nice cause it lets light in. It is mounted approx 7 feet high and approx 1ft high by 2 feet wide.
