Hope someone will be able to help. I'm looking for a craft/gift wrapping design. My husband is remodeling our basement and has set aside a space for me to do sewing and crafts - along with wrapping gifts.
| |______________|
Door 6' 7" 4'
|
Open Space
I want a cabinet on the 6'7" wall that will house gift bags, wrapping paper, tape, then dowels for holding tube wrapping paper and ribbon on spools. Along the 6'7" wall will be a counter that will wrap around to the 4' wall which will house my sewing machine. Above the sewing machine is an open area (window?). Behind me is open space which leads to the furnace room door. Thought I saw something (gift wrapping area) on one of the redesign programs or on a reorganizing one. Hope I have made myself clear enough. I know what I want, but to put it down on paper, er, e-mail is another matter. Thanks. (Went to the preview post and the 4 is suppose to be under the right line, also under the 4 is suppose to another line, which seems to be on the left hand side)

i think the plan you have is great. a long counter with a cabinet above and possibly below, too. several dowel rods for the paper. all sounds good. make sure the height of the counter is good for you, whether you'll be standing at it or sitting, you'll want to customize the height for your height & needs.
i'm confused about the space above the sewing machine, though. is it a window? or are you considering installing a window? or what? if it's just blank wall space, i think i'd put some sort of cabinet or shelving or a rack full of little pegs for spools of thread, or something useful there.
another thought about that long counter - if you do a lot of sewing and could use a larger surface to lay out fabric on, maybe you could hinge another counter on top of the counter, so that it could be pulled out/down and you could double your work surface. you'd have to have a couple of legs of some sort that you could put under each corner for support when the top is pulled down, but that shouldn't be a problem.
i would just try to picture yourself doing all the different activities you'll be doing there, and try to foresee any problems or any additional needs. just plan it out really well in advance and i'm sure it'll turn out great & be a wonderful bonus space for you. you're a lucky woman!
