Hi all,
I'm framing bi-fold doors into a new closet and I was told that unlike traditional doors bi-folds do not require any aditional space for door jambs. I've already framed the opening at 72" by 80" so my question is what do I finish the door opening with? Do I drywall around the opening? Wouldn't this take up 1" of my opening? I know there are probably about a dozen differrent ways to do this so let me know the accepted standard way.

Find the guy that told you that bifolds don't need a jamb and kick his butt. :rolleyes:
Of course bifolds need a jamb. Either that, or the opening would need to be finished with drywall before the bifold goes in. At any rate, you have to allow for that when you build the rough opening.
If you will be using a jamb, and trimming it with casing, you need to add 2" to the width and 1" to the height. (i.e. if the finished opening is 72 x 80 1/2, the rough opening should be about 74 x 81 1/2.
If you will be finishing the opening with drywall you have to be especially sure that the rough opening is plumb and square, level across the top, and the same width from top to bottom. You would have to allow about 5/8" on each side for the drywall (includes an extra 1/8 for the cornerbead), so in that case, the rough opening would have to be 73 1/4 x 81 1/8.
