Help! I've drilled the hole in the door for a deadbolt too large. I couldn't hold the 1" wood drillbit steady and it must have wandered a bit. How can I patch up the excess (wood filler?) and will the deadbolt still be "safe" to operate?

Please help if you can.

hi
if the hole was drill on the bolt side
you can get a longer plate to reinforce the hole
go to a local locksmith shop they have them

You are attempting to install the deadbolt latch by using the "drive in" method, but your deadbolt should have also come with the accessories needed to install the latch into a mortise. There should be a rectangle shaped latch plate with 2 screw holes in it for this purpose- if you mortise out a rectangle shaped hole, it shouldn't matter if your hole is a little sloppy.

The only other idea I'd have would be getting some JB weld, and apply the putty around the latch then insert it in the hole and let it dry.
