I read the post regarding the border that is peeling the sheetrock paper off, but wasn't sure if your response would be the same for me as far as the plastic is concerned. Mine involves the entire bathroom, not just a border.

The wallpaper was applied directly to the sheetrock, obviously no paint or primer on the sheetrock. Currently I am using a scorer and warm water to soak. But it's pulling the paper off the sheetrock. Will a steamer make any difference? I thought I read once that a steamer can sometimes damage a wall so I'm afraid to use it when there is no primer or paint on the sheetrock.

And I saw it said to use Gardz and then joint compound to repair the sheetrock. What is Gardz? Just a primer? If so, will any primer work? And why not just use the joint compound?

So many questions, so little time. :D

I would say if warm water is damaging the walls, then a steamer will do worse.
Gardz is a special primer made specifically for repairing torn drywall. If you just mud over the torn areas, the moisture content in the mud will cause the brown layer of drywall to bubble, over and over if not treated.
Oil primer will work for this also, but the Gardz is water based and more user-friendly.

So, no professional suggestions for me?

Hello,

His suggestions worked great,

There was a spot in the closet that the people just put the wallpaper over bare sheetrock. His suggestion of spraying it and then leaving plastic on it worked and didnt damage the sheetrock.

What I did was use a mixture of vinegar and water (since diff didnt work at all) and used a paper scorer on the paper to let the mixture soak through. I let it sit under the plastic for 30-45 minutes and when I peeled the plastic back the wallpaper came with it. As far as the residue glue I just used a spray bottle and sponge with that mixture and cleaned right up.

I then used GARDz to seal the wall where the paper was ripped and then put a layer of copmound up and so far so good.

The GARDZ dried as hard as a rock and sealed it up nicely.

Take care
Bill

Thanks Bill!

I tried DIF too, and plain water actually works better! But, I'll certainly give the plastic a try tomorrow.

I have been to Walmart, Lowes, and Home Depot here, and none of them carry Gardz. Kilz makes a latex primer now too, will that do?

Go to a real paint store, they will carry the Gardz. And no, Kilz2 primer will not function the same as Gardz in this application.

Hello,

I called the company and they said they only sent to paint stores that product.

Take care
