I am wondering if anyone out there has either installed nitrous on a 5 hp Briggs flathead or if anyone has heard of this being done- My son and I have purchased a concealable nitrous system from a major manufacturer- we have also purchased all of the internal Briggs parts to upgrade and "scatter proof" the engine the best we can- I would like any installation and tuning tips if you have them as this is a first time venture for us- Thanks

I am only 14 but my dad worked with some one who did gokart racing with briggs engines did put nitrous on one of their carts but they kept breaking something in the engine so they had to stop. It was just to much for the engine.

I would put a strong guard over the drive chain and flywheel and install a billet connecting rod.

The nitrous will provide more oxygen to the engine, so you also need to give it more fuel to get a power increase.

It is very easy to push that engine beyond it's limits without nitrous so if you are seriously using it to get the last bit of power I can guarantee that the engine will "grenade". Basically you've got an engine that was designed to be cheap and disposable. Standard racing modifications can easily produce enough power to destroy the engine so nitrous is not really needed to push it over the edge.

A full blown briggs racing engine can potentially put out up to 15 hp.

Those nitrous kits they sell are BS. its not really N20, if you want real power, get a new cam. Comp Cams makes briggs cams, and you cna get thim with a slightly higher lift for more fuel flow. Also, Go with a forged piston and billit connecting Rod. You will probably need new rings as well.

And those engines are called L heads, not flat heads for some reason.
