I am new to this forum. I hope someone can help me with my dilema. Today hubby dearest decided that he was going to buy ceramic tile for our kitchen and dining area. We had decided a while back to do this and I was leaning towards a more neutral tile colour. well a company in our town was going out of business and he bought Blue. Yes Blue. they have a mixture of a little grey in them also. Problem is my living room and formal dining area is painted in greens. Olive and Sage. The dinnette area is visable from these rooms. I have a century home..alot of natural woodwork and I don't want to paint it. So suggestions for wall colours would be greatly appreciated. Guess my mustard colour that I wanted won't be happening :wall:

Firstly, as long as the tones are the same, then greens/blues can go very nicely together & flow from one room to the next.

What color are your kitchen cabinets? Countertops? Appliances? Dinette set? Those should all be taken into consideration, obviously, when you choose the wall color.

Without knowing any of those things, I can sit here and say go ahead with either a blue or even tan on the walls...but take the other things into consideration!

i'd kill him! blue?! i wouldn't install it. can you return/exchange it?

any plans to ever move? blue will not be good for resale.

your sage/olive/mustard/natural woodwork decor sounds great - i wouldn't add blue & gray to the mix.

how much was spent on it? can you sell it? seriously....i wouldn't install it. if this is your long-term home, don't put down tile that you don't love. tile is too hard to change & life's too short!

maybe I could sell it. There are 400 tiles. He still thinks he did well as the same tiles, brand and everything are at homedepot for $3.00 a tile and he got them at this bankrupcy sale for 50 cents each. So only 200 bucks. You are right though. Blue is not for this house. Sorry about the profanity,,but it was mild compared to what it could be in this situation...especially since he actually LIKES the blue tile.

what's on the floor now? is the blue even remotely better than what's there?

what in the world was he thinking? clearly your other rooms are in green tones. i can't believe he'd do that, without consulting you, especially knowing that it was unreturnable! truly astonishing. you have my sympathies. hold your ground & just say no! tell him it was his mistake & he can either sell it in the next garage sale or tile the garage floor with it!

and i'm not judging you regarding the ***. it's my job to keep the forums clean. believe me - if i were you, i'd be swearing like a truck driver!

the floor has old as in almost prehistoric vinyl. It is beige and it has a speckle in it. I think it is straight out of the 50's. The rest of the house has been updated and we just finished putting in all new windows and blowing in insulation. As we have spent alot of cash lately on this house, we decided that we would have to live with the floor for another 6 months or so. So he thought he was providing me with a nice floor. The thing is that the tile is very nice. It just doesn't mesh with my "idea" of a colour scheme. I took it to a benjamin moore store today and took my paint chips of my other rooms. The man there found a dark blue grey paint chip that actually looks nice when combined with the other paints in my home. And he said that it brings out more of the grey and minimizes the blue in the tile. I just am afraid that once tile would be installed it wouldn't look as good as he said. He told me to pull some green into the room, plants ect. oh boy,.I am so confused. I do have to say though that my husband is not normally this stupid. He usually gives me free reign over the decorating, he did honestly thought he was doing a good thing. He now knows beyond a doubt that it was not a good thing. He has promised never to buy anything for the house again without me being there.

Sounds to me like he was well-intentioned. I wouldn't be TOO hard on him. But that doesn't mean that you have to use the tile! That's a pretty permanent item that's hard to change.

Assure your husband that there are ALWAYS tiles on sale at home improvement stores (ie: Home Depot) and so forth. You can get a good deal, but you shouldn't settle for something like this if you don't love it & aren't happy with, just because it was a good deal!

I'd try to sell it, or another option is that you could donate it to a local charity (or a family you personally know is in need & might like the blue tile)...that could make both of you feel good, right? Then wait until you have the resources to really do what you want, and shop around, be patient!
