Non-functioning deadbolt
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My new house's garage has a side door with double cylinder deadbolt lock. The key goes in but will not turn the bolt. I removed the two screws on the interior side and was able to get the bolt retracted to open the door. I cannot seem to get this lock to function. It appears to be brand new. I did not take the whole assemble apart to see if something was preventing the bolt from moving. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Xaviar,
This could be one of 2 things. First, and this is what I suspect, is that the lock is out of "Time". With the lock apart, rotate the tail pieces toward the hinge side of the door. (Inside and outside will rotate in opposite directions.)
Then, put the lock back in the door. It should work now. If not, the bolt itself is bad. Try using a flatblade screwdriver to extend the bolt. If it won't extend freely, it is bad. (Bad may not be the correct word. Spray it with WD-40 and try and extend it again. If it extends, do it several times to help clean it. I have seen water/rain do this many times). If it doesn't change the situation, NOW, the bolt is bad and needs to be replaced. Again, this could be caused by rain/moisture, but it's gone beyond the point of just needing lubrication. Your local Box store, or your locksmith will carry them. They are readily available.
This should get you going. Stop back and let me know what you find.

"The key goes in but will not turn the bolt."
Backing up a bit, did the key turn freely in the cylinder when you had it out of the door?
Regards
