We have lifted the old lanolium covering the original oak wood floors in the home (build in the 1920's). How should we proceed with removing the black adhesive type paper used when installing the lanolium?

Unfortunately I think you may have just gotten yourself into a mess.....

That black stuff you see is more than likely asbestos. If you scrape it than it becomes airborn which obviously is bad. MANY homes have asbestos so do not feel bad. The thing most people do is to encapsolate it. Hiring people to get rid of the stuff is extremely expensive and time consuming.

So what do you do now that the linoleum is up and the asbestos is all exposed???? That is up to you. Some people still scrap it off and say they are not worried.......I would NEVER do that in a house....especially if I have a family. IF it is indeed asbestos then personaly I would either have it removed or throw some plywood down, a couple of moisture barriers and install a new floor. I know that is totaly not what you want to hear but there is a reason why people where special suits, respirators and the WHOLE room is made so no dust particles can escape and an exhaust system is brought in when they remove asbestos......it is not cool stuff. I would check with a pro to see if it is indeed asbestos and then research and weigh your options.......good luck
