Hi all I am new here, but hope I can explain what we want to do.
We are refinishing our basement. Drywall is hung and painted. We want to put in a drop ceiling but we are unsure if there is a way to do this with the drop ceiling coming around the duct work and support beam that runs the lenth of the basement. We want the ceiling higher than those because of door and window clearance. We really do not want to box them in with drywall if we can help it. Thanks JOJO

Boxing it in with drywall is the only sensible thing to do. Screw a 2x2 to the floor joists alongside the duct. Cut a length of drywall the width of the duct, and screw it along the top edge to the 2x2. Screw another 2x2 along the bottom edge of the drywall (even with the bottom of the duct). Repeat this procedure on the opposite side of the duct. Now all you have to do is hang a piece of drywall on the bottom, which you screw to the 2x2 on each side.

You will only lose 1/2" of headroom under the duct, and your drop ceiling can now butt into the drywall on both sides of the duct.
