I am going to install a birch prehung door.I am going to stain it.I heard birch was hard to stain.Is there anything I should know befor I start?

You might want to apply some wood conditioner immediately before staining, such as Minwax Wood Conditioner.

Yes, birch is kinda a PITA to stain. If not using a wood conditioner, which may be the same thing as a presealer (I can't say for sure), it will blotch up, taking the stain more in some areas than others. A presealer will go a long way to remedy that, but since I'm not a fan of stains at all, I don't have a lot of experience with sealers. I only use stain when the customer just insists.

Personally I have never had any problems staining birch. Whether you use a wash sealer or not after staining be sure to wipe off all excess stain, seal and coat with with poly/varnish.
