How come my portable cd player takes only 1 AA battery (1.5v), but to plug it into an external power source it requires 4.5v? Why the difference?
Doesn't make sense to me. What's the deal?

This question cannot be answered because the designs can vary like crazy. That 1.5V can be boosted easily with a charge pump, or boost regulator to what ever voltage is desired. This draws more current, but a higher voltage is obtained to power the device. Once again the designs of the device are infinite.
