Hi:

I have a Subzero model 561 fridge/freezer unit. I am not sure how old it is, it was in the house when I moved in.

I noticed that the fridge unit was not cooling properly. The upper shelves were just below room temperature, but the lower shelves seemed cool enough.

I inspected the fan and coils on the outside of the unit (they are up above) which seemed pretty clean but I vacuumed them anyway.

I took the back of the fridge compartment off to expose the coil which was iced up. After removing the ice with a hair dryer and cleaning out the drain line, the fridge seemed to be cooling properly again.

I read on the forum about other brands that this may have something to do with the defrost timer - but I am not sure if my model has one, and if so, how I can determine if it is faulty?

Appreciate your help...
Thanks
Peter

If you have one you can advance it manually[with the compressor running] till you hear a click and the compressor turns off then in a short bit the heater should come on and melt everything. This test will only tell you if everthing other than the timer is ok. If you have any ice on the coils and when you advance it the heater does not come on then it may be some thing other than the timer. Do the test first. If you need a pic of a timer do a google search for---- test a defrost timer. A regular search not a picture search and click on a link or 2
