I just recently moved into a new home with a DSC 832/5501 alarm system. After a series of hassels in getting the alarm working (could not get alarm code from the previous owner--had to plead with a local dealer to come in to reset the code and of course pay for what took all of 30 seconds).
I set the "Stay" button expecting that only the doors would be armed and was I wrong and were my neighbors unhappy to have my alarm blarring in the middle of the night!. As it turns out, only 1 of 5 motions sensors are turned off when the stay feature is used. I have searched the web for hours and gone through several alarm manuals but cannot find any information on how to reprogram the button (so that more zones are automatically bypassed). I know that I can manually bypass the zones, but knowing how horrible my memory is, I am likely to forget to do this on a regular basis and would rather have the stay button do it for me.
Any advise?

The issue is not how the [stay] button is programmed, but how the zones are configured. All of the zones for the motion detectors need to be set as "stay/away" zones in zone programming.
Are these motions the only devices on their respective zones? If so, then the fix is pretty straight foreward, If they are mixed in with other devices, then it can be more complicated.

There are two motions detectors, each appears to be programmed as it own zone that will set off the alarm in "stay" mode. Do these need to be reprogrammed as away zones? If so, how do I do that?

In section 001 of the program, those zones need to be set as type 5 (interior stay/away).

I'm still a bit confused about what to do. I understand the concepts of stay vs away and that certain zones are tied to each function. But I still don't understand what steps to take to reprogram the two zones that I do not want to operate in stay mode.

Ok, lets start from scratch. Do you have the installer code and know how to get into the system programming? Do you have a copy of the installer manual and programming forms?

It's no to all questions. I tried to find the manual online and couldn't track it down. The alarm was already installed in the house that I purchased and there is no documentation to speak of. I do know what company installed the system, but hate the thought of having to pay them to come back and do this change when I just paid them to reset the password to get the system working. I should have written down the installers code when they were resetting my password, but not knowing much about the system, I didn't even think to do that.

Ok, to find the manual, you will need to search using the actual model number; PC-5010, using Power 832 will get you limited information. You can get the user manual for free from the DSC website.
If they were able to reset the panel, with any luck they left the installer code at the factory default, which is 5010.
You _really_ need an installer manual to pull this off, DSC programming is too non-intuitive to walk you through more than minimal stuff.
Try this: enter *8 5010. If the keypad shows "enter section" we can do something. If it does, just press # until the system goes back to run mode.
