I'm in the process of building an outdoor island kitchen and trying to decide how to cover both the island walls and the countertops. Similar projects I've seen used stone, stucco, or slate tile finishes. I prefer an acid stained concrete finish, but I am a novice do-it-yourself-er with no desire to pour concrete forms. I would also like to keep the cost low. Right now I have a steel frame (72"x28"x36") which I intend to cover with cement backerboard. My idea was to use Quikcrete's concrete resurfacer to cover the cement board and then use an acid stain followed by a clear acrylic sealer. Lots of questions:
First of all, will this work to form a durable surface?
Can this resurfacer be applied to both horizontal and vertical surfaces? If so, to what consistency should it be mixed for each? Also, how thick of a layer will I need?
Will it be possible to get a smooth finish for the countertops?
How long will it need to cure before acid staining?
Will the backerboard screws cause a problem with resurfacing or acid staining?
Any advice is greatly appreciated.
