mildew smell in washing machine

I have a front load washing machine and load of clothes mildewed in the machine. Now the machine and everything washed in it smell like mildew. How can I get the smell out of the machine?

I would run the washer through a cycle with the hottest water you can and a cup of bleach, but no clothes in the machine.
