Hi,

I have finished my curved 16" high concrete block wall. I now want to apply flagstones to it. I put plenty of wall ties in. Should be easy since average size of flagstones will only be 8" or so but any tips I can get would be great.

I'm using a 1:3 Portland cement/sand mix to avoid staining (I also have fireclay on hand to improve workability). Should I wet the concrete block and flagstone? The flagstone seems kind of porous (Arizona).

I haven't bought the flagstone yet but I didn't see anything about gauged flagstone at the supplier. Perhaps it's a service they perform? I only need 15 sq ft or so anyhow so I could probably buy 1 or 2 large pieces which would give me a near uniform thickness. Don't know how important it is to have uniform thickness especially on curved wall.

Is the basic technique to apply approx 1" of mortar starting at the bottom and press flagstone into cement using ties on second level where available? I suppose the stiffness of the mix is critical and this is where I may need to experiment a little.

Thanks for all who have helped especially Concretemasonry. I doubt I could have easily found a pro to do this job because of the complexity, extensive irrigation pipe rerouting etc. not to mention that it would be a budget buster.
