Hello.I have a bi-level home.I painted the upstairs a yellow with a tint of brown(teasel it is called) and painted the 2 walls in my entry red(roasted pepper),the one which goes to the upstairs and the wall the door is in,it all goes well with the hardwood floor. Now my question is,the wall that goes down to the basement???It has carpet which is reddish-brown, and I plan on painting the basement walls a light taupe or cream. Now to pull it all together Im stumped on which color to do that wall, the taupe, yellow or red??Any advice would be great. Thanks

so, there are hardwood floors in the entry and going up stairs, but carpet going downstairs?

normally, i'd think all the "entry walls" should be the red color, but since going down, you've got reddish brown carpet, will the red walls go with that carpet? probably not. as long as the cream/taupe color works with the yellow/tan color upstairs (i'm assuming you'll be able to see all 3 colors at one time from the entry) i think i'd opt for the cream or taupe.

but if the red is okay with that carpet, go red.

Thanks so much. The red does not go well with the carpet at all!And yes all three walls are visible from the entrance way,I didnt want it to feel so busy when you walk in the entry with a mix of colors so you say the taupe/cream will blend in?Thanks

well, only you know for sure if they all go together, since i can't see them.

it seems a little off-balanced though. ideally, i'd want either the whole entry space one color, or just the door wall an accent color. if the red doesn't go with that red/brown carpet, then it can't be good to be seeing them both at the same time anyway, right? why'd you pick a color for the entry that doesn't even go with the carpet that's right there? can you redo that red color? maybe so it's more similar to the carpet color?

could you use the teasle color downstairs, too? or maybe just a lighter version of it? because now i'm thinking you've got too much going on in this space & it's the first impression point. sorry to change my mind on ya.

any chance of pulling up the carpet on the steps going down & redoing them to match the steps going up?

hello. you know I just had in my mind I wanted red and I think it goes alright with my upstairs furniture, etc.,,not so much thinking of that carpet.Pulling the carpet up at this point isnt an option ( money). And I see what you mean by not going together. I really dont want to paint that entrance again,it was so high and a big pain.It really bothers me because it is the first thing you see when you come in.What do you think if I did the red and ran my white baseboards down the stairs and with some artwork the contrast between the carpet and paint color wont be so drastic?Just a thought. Or just stick with the teasel color? Thanks you sooo much for this.

i'm sure it'll be fine. the teasel & the taupe & the cream are all very neutral - any combination will probably be fine with the red in between them.

hello. So you are saying to go with the neutral colors instead of the red?The suggestion of baseboards and artwork to cover most of the red doesnt sound so appealing?thanks

no, i meant that either of the neutrals (the taupe, cream, or the yellow/teasle) will be fine for the wall going downstairs because of the red in between it and the upstairs color. that was the original question, wasn't it? Now to pull it all together Im stumped on which color to do that wall, the taupe, yellow or red??

what i'm not saying out loud (which might be the source of your confusion) is that i'm not so sure that the taupe color would really work with the teasle color, BUT because they're separated by the red, and they're on 2 different levels, it'd probably be fine.

whatever you paint the wall going down is the color you're using down there, right???

I see what you mean, Im leaning more towards the teasle color now,I am going to go do that and if all fails try again!! Thanks you so much for your help.Take care :)
