I'm trying to attach an awning for shade to a stucco column. I thought at each edge of the stucco there would be a wood frame, but I found nothing. I drilled a few holes and used 3" drywall screws but found nothing to attach to.

Is there some secret to attaching to stucco? What is the frame made of? What's the best way to find wood slats? The stud finder gives me an error as I try to calibrate on the rough surface.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum
It depends on the construction of your house. Some are built with block/brick and the stucco is applied directly to the surface. Stick built house have tar paper and wire lath attached to the exterior wall [could be plywood, stryofoam, siding, etc]. You might try using the stud finder on the inside and transferring the measurements to the exterior.
