Hello all and thanks for being here. First time poster and need help. I have discovered that if I turn the a/c on at the thermostat, it will run and cool just fine until the unit cycles off and then if it is to come back on via the thermostat, BAM....it blows the breaker. I have been living this past couple days by just turning the thermostat on, letting it run for 30 minutes or so and then just shutting it off at the thermostat. I can do this several times a day, no problem. I just can't let the thermostat cycle the unit on. That is when it blows.
What do you all think the problem is? I took the outside unit apart, cleaned it, checked for burnt wires, and replaced filters.

If your unit is not equipped with a anti short cycle switch the thermostat could be telling the unit to kick right back on right after just shutting off and the compressor cannot start against the high head pressure and kicks the breaker, since the unit system has not had enough time to equalize the higha nd low side pressures. You may want to examine where the thermostat is mounted as there may be a enviromental factor causing wild temp swings in that area. I would probably go ahead and replace the thermostat since it is suspect, some of the newer electronic models actually have built in anti short cycle timers and you could probably just get by with a nice new thermostat instead of having to pay a tech to install a timer in the unit itself or relocating the thermostat ain't technology great?

id have to agree with the other tech . but you might want to also check to make sure you have right breaker size in box for unit as well . and also breaker could be going bad as well witch will cause it to kick out. if wright size breaker go with the new tstat frist . and if wrong size breaker dont try and change it your self please get someone who knows how to change them

As an AC tech, my suspicion is either a) short cycling situation or b) a bad run capacitor. A bad run capacitor ESPECIALLY if the condensing unit is a Goodman. Don't know what Goodman did in their R&D but those GE dual run capacitors they put in are not good.

about the whole set up for about the last five years. Outside unit was replaced then, but the thermostat is the same old same old for at least 15 years. Plus the breaker box for the a/c units is mounted right above them on the brick wall of the house, that has not changed.
I was thinking the breaker could be going. I am happy to change the breaker and I can also change the thermostat. Is there one you all prefer me to do first or over the other?
Thanks again for your response. I will make sure to look for a fancy new thermostat with the built in ant-short cycle in it.
