View Full Version : Can't get water from hot water taps
We just moved the hot water heater and pressure tank. After finally getting pressure to our system we are finding that we can't get much more than a trickle from the hot water taps but the cold is fine. Hot taps start with a bit of pressure but die out. Have already been trying to push air out of the hot taps for about 2 hours but not much change in the hot tap pressure.

Medea, Welcome to the DIY Forums.
The hot water pressure is controlled by the cold water pressure coming into the tank. Have you checked for a closed or broken valve in the cold water inlet (to the heater) pipe? Good luck.
We reused a large piece of pipe that had an old siezed knob on it (just assuming it is to turn off the water going into the hot water heater) and it also had a newer shut off valve on it. Should we cut the old seized one off and just solder on a straight piece there? We are getting a bit more pressure at first now but it still peters off and spits out air.

I would remove the old valve(s). One or both could be bad or clogged. If needed I would install a new ball valve. Since the old valve seized I am assuming it is a gate valve. Sometimes these valves drop the gate and stop functioning. IF you are sure the newer valve is still functioning correctly you can continue to use it, just remove the seized one and use a straight run of pipe to complete the line.
One last thought.
When you drained the water heater to move it, you may have broke loose the sediment and scale on the bottom of the tank. This would float around when you refilled the tank. This may have clogged the hot side of ALL of your fixtures.
To check, turn off the supply valve to a hot fixture side. Remove the supply line at the valve(part going up to the fixture). While holding a rag over the end of the valve turn the water on and off 2 or 3 times to clear any blockage there. If this give you back your pressure you will have to do this to each fixture.
If you get pressure/flow at the valve but not at the faucet, you will have to clear the debris from the faucet itself.
NOTE:If this works on the first one, you will have to drain and flush your water heater to remove the sediment in it before hand, or, this will happen at a constant rate until all is cleared from the lines(major headache). Link below is proper procedure to drain and flush of your water heater. Draining is not enough. It MUST be drained and flushed several times to remove all the sediment that has built up.
The sediment can block the air and prevent purging.

Good luck
Thank-you so much! It's the first time in two years that we've had pressure. The old valve was blocking water flow into the hot water tank so we put on a new one. Just flushing the tank out now and gonna check the element b/c water is warm but not getting hot. May be posting again if we have a prob with this. Thanks again.
