I will be installing a new Kenmore Dishwasher. The instructions state that the drain tie in must be 20" above the floor. My installation will be connecting to a drain line below the floor. The instructions state that I may damage the machine if it isn't connected the 20" above the floor. I don't understand the 20" requirement and what is the theory behind this requirement? Can I connect below the floor?

johnhl, Welcome to the DIY Forums.
I may have even more bad news for you. Most States now require an "air gap" for dishwashers. This means you must have an extra hole in the sink or countertop for the air-gap. It used to be that you had to run the drain hose from the DW up over the top of the next cabinet to keep the water from flowing back into the DW. Now they say you have to install an air gap to keep the DW from sucking water from the drainline back into the DW. If you connect at any point less than recommended you void the warranty. If you need and do not install an air gap, you violate code. Sorry. Good luck.
