View Full Version : CAN I TILE OVER TOP OF EXISTING TILE?
CAN I DO THIS ? HELP PLEASE
I did. First I made sure all the tiles were solid removing the loose ones and filling in the holes. It has been 4 years and all is well. I laid 12x12 over 1x1. Now I am doing another floor but have to remove all the tiles because of water damage. Wish I didn't have to because it is a pain!
Hi Housewife;
It can be done if you have the height tolerance to do it. And also if all the tiles that are there now are secure. Go to your local homecenter and get some thinset that is rated for going over ceramic tile. Laticrete, TEC, and Custom all make a thinset for this purpose. Make sure all the tiles are free of dirt, wax, soap or anything that would prevent a proper bond. I usually wash them with a good quality tile cleaner and I also try to install them so that the new tile overlaps the grout joints of the old tile.(use a larger tile than original). Remember use the most expensive thinset you can find (about 25-30 dollars per bag) thats the stuff and read the back of the bag, it will tell you if Ceramic Tile is a suitable substrate.
Good Luck and Regards,
