Let him have the blue. Its good for children to have some control over their own environment.

what is the flooring in the hallway leading to his room?

decorating-wise, it's really better to have more of a neutral floor throughout the home, so that it flows better and seems larger. to chop up each room with a different colored carpet makes the space seem smaller. also, that's a very dated way of decorating. with neutral floors, it's easier to change the decor & colors of the home by repainting & wallpapering. changing carpet is much more expensive (and a huge hassle). also, neutral floors are best if and when you go to sell your home.

you've let him pick his colors, now just go neutral with the carpet.

what/where exactly are the 2 shades of blue? just the walls painted 2-tone (top & bottom)? what's the bedding pattern?

Spoken like a true carpet salesperson! (I'm just kidding!)

Seriously...it is good for kids to have some control over their environment, but repainting a room is one thing, having to replace a more costly item (and more difficult item to replace) like a carpet is another. Particularly when your child is choosing a color that can become dated, or limit your future paint/decorating options. Personally, I'd never put a blue carpet down, any more than I'd put a blue countertop in my kitchen. Very limiting.

I agree with Annette, that a neutral color on the carpet would be a better choice, and stress to your son that you've let him make some decisions, and now you have to make some yourself! You're working together. That's what we've always done with our own sons rooms. If we left ALL the decisions up to them, we'd have some very scary-looking rooms in our home!

carlyfc,

Thanks for your advice, i eventually convinced him there was going to be too much blue. He settled for a light coloured wooden floor with a small white rug to cover a small section. That and his simpson posters, it looks great and he is a happy wee boy now.

Thanks again
