preparation

I have torn up the old ceramic tiles in my bathroom and I am ready to lay new ones. There is some old glue and paper on the floor from the old tiles ( they were like 1 inch squares glued to 12x12 panels and installed ). All is a pain to get up. Is it really neccesary to get every bit of this crap up? If so how do I do it?
